Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; perhaps originally modelled on a French lexical item, or perhaps originally modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: re- prefix, figure v.
Etymology: < re- prefix + figure v., originally after Middle French refigurer to remake, recreate (a1358; French †refigurer) or its etymon post-classical Latin refigurare to transform (Vulgate). N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (rīfi·giŭɹ) /riːˈfɪɡ(jʊ)ə(r)/.
1. transitive. To figure again; to represent in a different shape or form. Cf. figure v. 1, 2. Now rare.
