Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin adhamat-, adhamare.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin adhamat-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of adhamare to secure ( < classical Latin ad- ad- prefix + hāmus hook: see hamous adj.), former reading (16th cent.) in a fragment of Cicero preserved in Nonius 2. 5, where modern editions read classical Latin adamāre adamate v.
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
transitive. To secure as with a hook; (also) to catch with a hook or net.
