Etymology: < Middle French remollitif (of a remedy) that has the power of softening (1314 in Old French) and its etymon post-classical Latin remollitivus that has the power of softening (13th cent. in a British source) < classical Latin remollīt- , past participial stem of remollīre to soften (see remollient adj.) + -īvus -ive suffix. In use as noun after post-classical Latin remollitivum softening application (a1350 in a British source; 1363 in Chauliac); compare Middle French remollitif softening application (late 16th cent. in Paré). Compare remollition n.
