Etymology: < refrigerate v. + -ory suffix1, probably originally after French †réfrigératoire part of a still (end of the 15th cent. in Middle French). With sense 2 compare post-classical Latin refrigeratorium fan (1622) and also slightly earlier refrigeratory adj.
1. Chemistry. A container at the head of a still filled with cold water through which the worm passes, for condensing vapour; any container or apparatus employed for a similar purpose. Now historical.
