Etymology: < refugee v. + -ed suffix1, after French réfugié (1719 in the passage translated in quot. 1722), use as adjective of past participle of réfugier refuge v. Compare earlier refuged adj.
rare in 19th and early 20th cent.
That has taken refuge, that is a refugee; fugitive.
