单词 reja
释义

rejan.

Brit. /ˈreɪxə/, U.S. /ˈreɪhɑ/
Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish reja.
Etymology: < Spanish reja (1396 as rexa denoting a grille to prevent fish escaping from a fish pond, 1408 in sense ‘iron gate in a doorway’) < Catalan rexa bar of a padlock (1115), (in plural) bars of a window grille (1309), (in singular) grille (1453) < Spanish Arabic rīša and Maghribi Arabic rīša, denoting various objects resembling a feather or parts of a feather (either the quill or the wing) in shape, e.g. (in Spanish Arabic) ‘tooth of a lock’, ‘spoke of a wheel’ (although both of these senses are apparently first attested later: a1204 and c1500 respectively), (in Maghribi Arabic and other regional varieties) ‘stylus’, ‘iron nib’, ‘blade’, ‘pin’, ‘lancet’, etc., all transferred senses of literary Arabic rīša feather. Although a sense ‘grille’ does not appear to be attested in Arabic, it is conceivable that the sense ‘quill’ could have developed into ‘bar of a grille’ and hence ‘grille’ itself.
In Spain: a wrought-iron screen or grille used to protect windows, tombs, etc.
