单词 regifuge
释义

regifugen.

Brit. /ˈrɛdʒᵻfjuː(d)ʒ/, U.S. /ˈrɛdʒəˌfjudʒ/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin rēgifugium.
Etymology: < classical Latin rēgifugium festival celebrated at Rome on 24 February, associated with the expulsion of the kings (recorded only in an 8th-cent. epitome of a 2nd-cent. grammarian, but also described in Ovid, who calls it rēgis fuga flight of the king ( Fasti 2. 685)) < rēgi- , alternative stem of rēx king (see rex n.1) + fugere to flee (see fuge v.) + -ium (see -y suffix4).In classical Latin rēgifugium occurs only as the name of the festival commemorative of the expulsion, rather than the expulsion itself. For a slightly earlier occurrence of the Latin word in an English context compare:1649 Declar. Parl. expressing Grounds Late Proc. 16 The Romans, after their Regifugium of many hundred years together, prospered far more than under any of their Kings or Emperors.
