Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Probably partly a borrowing from French. Probably partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French registreur ; register v., -er suffix1.
Etymology: Probably originally < Middle French registreur, registrere person who registers, scribe, clerk (1303 in Old French) < post-classical Latin registrator registrator n. In later use partly also < register v. + -er suffix1. Compare registerer n., register n.2With the forms regestrier, registreer compare -ier suffix. It is likely that the following quot. reflects a spelling or typographical error for registrar n.:2007 Kerryman (County Kerry) (Nexis) 15 Mar.
