1949 Thorp & Smith in Soil Sci. 67 120 Soon after the definition of Lithosols was published in the 1938 Yearbook, it was realized that many weakly developed soils occur in deep soft-rock deposits, like loess and sand, that are not stony in the ordinary sense of the word. These nonstony soils were called lithosols for a time, but a practical need was felt for distinguishing deep soft soil materials from very stony ones. Hence the proposal of the name Regosol. This new term is not yet fully established in the literature, and it may prove desirable eventually to give the concept some other status than that of a great soil group.
1968 R. W. Fairbridge Encycl. Geomorphol. 523/1 Soil scientists sometimes use ‘regosol’ for soils developed without distinct horizons over deep unconsolidated ‘rock’.
1976 Sci. Amer. Sept. 174/3 ·7 billion hectares of sandy, undifferentiated soils called regosols are nonarable.
1990 Amer. Midland Naturalist 123 331 These soils, classed as Regosols or Quartzipsamments, have supported a savanna maintained by Pinus palustris.
2005 Ecology 86 782/1 Archaeophytes are preferentially represented on calcareous and dry soils such as rendzina, chernozem, and regosol.
