Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin regredī.
Etymology: < classical Latin regredī to go back, return, (specifically, of a celestial object) to exhibit retrograde motion < re- re- prefix + gradī to go (see gradient adj.). Compare earlier regress v., regredience n., regredient n., and slightly later regrade v.2
Now rare.
intransitive. To go back; spec. = regress v. 1a. Cf. regrade v.2
