Origin: Perhaps of multiple origins. Partly a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Perhaps partly formed within English, by derivation. Or perhaps partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: remain v., -er suffix4; remainder n.
Etymology: In sense 1 probably either < remain v. and -er suffix4, or < an unattested parallel in Anglo-Norman or Law French. In senses 2 and 3 a variant of remainder n.Later occurrences probably show a typographical error for remainder n.:1830 S. Davis Pupil's Arithm. (ed. 2) 18 The remainer, is what is left of the largest number, after the less number is taken from it.1863 Pop. Sci.
