单词 relaxative
释义

relaxativeadj.n.

Brit. /rᵻˈlaksətɪv/, U.S. /rəˈlæksədɪv/, /riˈlæksədɪv/
Forms: see relax v. and -ative suffix.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; originally modelled on an Italian lexical item. Etymons: relax v., -ative suffix.
Etymology: < relax v. + -ative suffix, originally after Italian †rilasciativo (1611 in Florio; compare quot. 1611). Compare Anglo-Norman and Middle French relaxatif soothing (mid 13th cent. in Anglo-Norman), laxative (1426), both rare. With use as noun compare post-classical Latin relaxativa (neuter plural) laxatives (13th cent. in a British source). Compare earlier laxative adj.
