Etymology: < ac- prefix + compliment n. Compare Anglo-Norman and Middle French accompliement , acompliement , Middle French accompliment , acompliment (1269 in Old French; apparently last used by Montaigne in the second half of the 16th cent.), Old Occitan acompliment (1488), both in sense ‘action or fact of accomplishing something, achievement’. Compare earlier accomplement v. Compare also earlier accomplement n., accomplishment n.
1. Apparently: complimentary language. Cf. compliment n. 1b. Obsolete.
