Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin rescrībere.
Etymology: < classical Latin rescrībere to write in reply, to write back, to rewrite, write again < re- re- prefix + scrībere to write (see scribe n.1). Compare Anglo-Norman rescrivre and Middle French rescripre, rescrire (French récrire) to write back, write in reply, to rewrite, write again (12th cent. in Old French).
1. intransitive. To write back, write in reply. Also occasionally transitive. Obsolete.
