Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin rescribendarius.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin rescribendarius papal officer charged with distributing the work among the copyists, and also responsible for levying a tax on certain papal documents (c1300) < classical Latin rescrībendum , gerund of rescrībere rescribe v. + -ārius -ary suffix1.

A papal officer charged with the supervision of and apportionment of copy to scribes in the papal chancellery.
