Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from German. Partly formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: German Reichsmark ; Reich n., mark n.2
Etymology: In α. forms < German Reichsmark (1872) < Reichs- , combining form of Reich kingdom, empire (see Reich n.) + Mark mark n.2 In β. forms < Reich n. + mark n.2, after German Reichsmark. Compare Middle Low German rīksmark . Compare earlier Reichsthaler n.Not fully naturalized in English.
Now historical.
The German mark. Cf. mark n.2 2d.Originally an unofficial name, but from 1924 to 1948 used as the official designation of the German currency (replacing the Rentenmark and replaced by the Deutschmark). Later historical use chiefly refers to this official designation.
