Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin remunerator ; remunerate v., -or suffix.
Etymology: Either < post-classical Latin remunerator rewarder, recompenser (Vulgate; late 2nd cent. in Tertullian; < classical Latin remūnerāt- , past participial stem of remūnerārī remunerate v. + -or -or suffix), or < remunerate v. + -or suffix. Compare French rémunérateur (beginning of the 14th cent. or earlier in Old French as remunerator), Catalan remunerador (1653), Spanish remunerador (15th cent.), Portuguese remunerador (1525), Italian rimuneratore, remuneratore (a1342 as remuneratore), which are all found as both adjective and noun.
