Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) formed within English, by derivation; perhaps partly modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Latin remuneratorius ; remunerate v., -ory suffix2.
Etymology: Either < post-classical Latin remuneratorius affording remuneration (12th cent.; < classical Latin remūnerāt- , past participial stem of remūnerāri remunerate v. + -ōrius -ory suffix2), or < remunerate v. + -ory suffix2, perhaps partly after Middle French remuneratoire (1514; French rémunératoire ). Compare Spanish remuneratorio (16th cent.), Portuguese remuneratório (1446). Compare later remunerative adj.
