Etymology: In sense 1 probably < re- prefix + murmuring adj.; compare earlier remurmuration n. and later remurmur v. In sense 2 < remurmur v. + -ing suffix2.
Chiefly poetic. rare after 18th cent.
1. Of the conscience: eliciting or giving rise to a quiet, insistent feeling of guilt. Cf. remurmuration n. Obsolete. rare.
