Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French rencontre.
Etymology: < Middle French rencontre fight, combat, skirmish, especially when arising as a result of a chance encounter, attack (13th cent. in Old French), reply, response, chance, chance occurrence (all 14th cent.), meeting, chance meeting or encounter with someone or something (15th cent.), unpremeditated duel (c1660), (in heraldry) representation of the face of a quadruped (1671) < rencontrer rencontre v. Compare earlier rencounter n., re-encounter n. N.E.D. (1906) gives also the non-naturalized pronunciation (raṅkoṅtr') /rɑ̃kɔ̃tr/.

1728 E. Chambers Cycl. Rencounter, or Rencontre, in Heraldry, is applied to Animals when they shew the Head in Front, with both Eyes, &c.
