Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: re- prefix, private adj.1, -ize suffix; re- prefix, privatize v.
Etymology: Either < re- prefix + private adj.1 + -ize suffix, or < re- prefix + privatize v. (although that is first attested later). Compare German reprivatisieren (1944 or earlier). Compare slightly earlier reprivatization n.
transitive. To return (a previously nationalized business, industry, or service) to private ownership and control. Cf. privatize v. 1. Also intransitive.
