Etymology: < Anglo-Norman renumee, Anglo-Norman and Middle French renomee, renommee (French renommée ) reputation, repute (c1150 in Old French, frequently with qualifying adjective, e.g. grant renommee , bonne renommee , mauvaise renommee ), fame, renown (third quarter of the 12th cent. or earlier in Anglo-Norman; earlier in sense ‘public voice announcing a noteworthy action or event’ (first half of the 12th cent. in Anglo-Norman)), use as noun of feminine past participle of renomer , renommer , renumer renown v. Compare Old Occitan renomada , renomnada repute. Compare earlier renown n. and later renome n., and also renomed adj.Examples of the spelling renome are taken to belong here, rather than at renome n., if they clearly show an accented final syllable (as e.g. in the variant reading of quot. c1405).
