Etymology: < classical Latin resectiōn-, resectiō action of cutting back or pruning, cut made by this process < resect- , past participial stem of resecāre resect v. + -iō -ion suffix1. In sense 3 perhaps a separate formation, < re- prefix + section n., after intersection n.; compare later resect v. 3. Compare Middle French resection , French résection action of cutting off or away (1549), action of cutting away a portion of bone (1799). Compare resecation n.
