Etymology: < Anglo-Norman acordaunce, Anglo-Norman and Middle French acordance, Middle French accordance (French (now literary and rare) accordance ) agreement, harmony (late 12th cent. in Old French), conformity of will or character (late 12th cent.), formal agreement, treaty (c1190) < acorder , accorder accord v. + -ance -ance suffix. Compare Old Occitan acordansa , Catalan acordança (15th cent.), Spanish acordanza (second half of the 13th cent. as †acordança ), Portuguese acordança (13th cent.), Italian †accordanza (first half of the 13th cent.). In sense 3 (which is not paralleled in French) after accord v.With the Older Scots form anecordans compare ancordyng at according adj. and adv. Forms.
