单词 resol
释义

resoln.

Brit. /ˈrɛzɒl/, U.S. /ˈrɛzɔl/, /ˈrɛzɑl/
Forms:

α. 1900s– resole Brit. /ˈrɛzəʊl/, U.S. /ˈrɛsoʊl/.

β. 1900s– resol.

Origin: Partly a borrowing from German. Probably also partly a borrowing from Sedish. Etymons: German Resol; Swedish resol.
Etymology: In sense 1 probably < Swedish resol (1893 or earlier: see below; < res- (in classical Latin rēsīna resin n.) + Swedish -ol -ol suffix), perhaps via German Resol (1894 in same sense: see below). In sense 2 < German Resol (H. Lebach 1909, in Zeitschr. f. angewandte Chem. 22 1601) < res- (in classical Latin rēsīna resin n.) + German -ol -ol suffix. Compare resitol n.The name of the disinfectant was apparently coined in Swedish by the Finnish chemist O. Aschan, although the coinage has not been traced. Compare the following quot.:1893 K. Hedman Om resol in Finska läkarsellskapets handlingar 35 441 Doktor O. Aschan har från trätjära framställt ett desinfektionsämne, hvilket han kallat ‘resol’. [Dr O. Aschan has produced a disinfectant from wood tar, which he has called ‘resol’.] Aschan was a Swedish-speaking Finn and wrote most of his work in Swedish (which, together with Finnish, is the joint official language of Finland), although he may have used German for some publications as well. German Resol is attested in 1894, in an abstract of the source of quot. 1893 above. With the β. forms, which are unparalleled in German, compare -ole suffix2.
