单词 renumerate
释义

renumeratev.1

Brit. /rᵻˈnjuːməreɪt/, U.S. /rəˈn(j)uməˌreɪt/, /riˈn(j)uməˌreɪt/
Forms: 1500s renumerat, 1500s– renumerate.
Origin: Apparently a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: remunerate v.
Etymology: Apparently a variant (by metathesis) of remunerate v., probably arising by folk-etymological association with words in numer- (see e.g. numerable adj., numeral adj., numeral n., etc.). Compare slightly later renumeration n.1 and later renumerative adj.Examples are very common in all periods down to the present (and appear earlier, and much more frequently, than examples of renumerate v.2). Although the explanation for many cases is likely to be typographical error, the frequency of the use and its persistency seem to suggest an apprehension that the metathesized form is correct. Compare the following:1970 R. H. Copperud Amer. Usage 232/2 Remunerate, sometimes misspelled renumerate.2000 Ling. Inq. 31 623 Examples [of reversal of consonants] include the pronunciations of English to remunerate as to renumerate (probably by analogy with to enumerate and numerous).
transitive. = remunerate v.
