Etymology: Apparently a variant (by metathesis) of remunerative adj., probably arising by folk-etymological association with words in numer- (see e.g. numerable adj., numeral adj., numeral n., etc.). Compare earlier renumerate v.¹ (and see discussion at that entry), and renumeration n.¹Remunerative occurs at several other points in the text cited in the following quot., and hence it seems likely that this isolated example of renumerative simply shows a typographical error:a1677 T. Manton 190 Serm. on 119th Psalm (1681) 940 Judgement is sometimes put for the Covenant of Works, or his strict renumerative Justice. Similarly, the following probably represents a typographical error, since remunerative occurs in this passage in an earlier edition (1745) of the same work:1757 J. Dickinson Familiar Lett. (new ed.) 259 He will proceed according to the Rules of distributive renumerative Justice, in adjusting and proportioning Rewards.
