Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin reptitius , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin reptitius that creeps (attested e.g. in a 1523 edition of Sallust Invectiva in M. Tullium Ciceronem 1, where modern editions read classical Latin repertīcius : see repertitious adj.) + -ous suffix. Compare repent adj.2, reptant adj., reptile adj., reptilious adj.Post-classical Latin reptitius < classical Latin rept- -, past participial stem of repere to creep (see repent adj.2) + -īcius -itious suffix1. Compare also the following examples of post-classical Latin reptitius in an English context:1552 T. Cooper Bibliotheca Eliotæ (rev. ed.) Reptitius, a, um, that crepeth secretly.1615 H.
