accordingadj.adv.

Brit. /əˈkɔːdɪŋ/, U.S. /əˈkɔrdɪŋ/
Forms: see accord v. and -ing suffix2; also late Middle English ancordyng, late Middle English occordand; English regional 1900s– accoording, 1900s– accorder; Scottish (Orkney) 1900s– accorn, 1900s– accorned, 1900s– accorun.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: accord v., -ing suffix2.
Etymology: < accord v. + -ing suffix2. Compare cording adj. and adv. at cord v.2 Derivatives, cording adj. Compare also accordant adj. and the French adjective cited at that entry. In sense A. 4 after French c'est selon (a1657). The form ancordyng in quot. 1480 at sense B. 2 (attested several more times in the Cely Letters & Papers) probably either shows dissimilation of consonants, or development of an intrusive -n- ; compare the form anlowyd (variant of the past participle of allow v., in the same quot.), and also angreed , variant of the past participle of agree v. (attested in the same source). The origin of the English regional form accorder is uncertain; it may show phonetic reduction of the ending. The Scots (Orkney) forms accorn and accorun apparently show reduction of the ending (in the latter case, with insertion of an epenthetic vowel); the form accorned may have developed from these forms by secondary suffixation with -ed suffix1.
