Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French repenner.
Etymology: < Middle French repenner, repesner, etc., to baulk, to kick (13th cent. in Old French; perhaps < an unattested post-classical Latin form *repedinare < classical Latin re- re- prefix + ped- , pēs foot (see -ped comb. form) + -ināre , suffix forming verbs), apparently with excrescent d (compare pound v.1, resound v.1, sound n.3, Mahound n., or forms at chamberlain n.). Compare Old Occitan repetnar (13th cent.), Catalan repetnar (14th cent.). Compare also Spanish respendar (c1250 as respennar).
Obsolete. rare.
intransitive. Of a horse: to kick or rear violently.

Etymology: < classical Latin rependere to weigh out, to pay for, to pay in return or recompense, to requite, repay, to purchase, to make up for, compensate, balance < re- re- prefix + pendere to pay (see pense v.1). Compare slightly later repensation n.
Obsolete. rare.
transitive. To give or do by way of repayment for an action; to repay or return (an action or feeling).
