Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; originally modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: resin n., -o- connective.
Etymology: < resin n. + -o- connective, originally after French résino- (formations in which are found from at least the late 18th cent.) Compare German resino- (formations in which are found from at least the early 20th cent.: see resinophore n.). With resino-electric adj., resino-vitreous adj. compare earlier resinous adj. 5.Found in a small number of words belonging to scientific and technical vocabulary, the earliest of which is an adaptation of a French term (late 18th cent.). Formations within English are found from the early 19th cent. Combining with second elements ultimately of Latin and Greek origin.
Forming adjectives (and, rarely, nouns) with the sense ‘(a substance that is both) resinous and ——’.
resino-electric adj. [compare French résino-électrique (1824 (in a translation of an English work) or earlier; apparently after English); compare slightly earlier resino-vitreous adj.] Obsolete acquiring or possessing a negative electric charge; cf. resinous adj. 5.
