Etymology: < classical Latin resistent-, resistēns, present participle of resistere resist v. Compare Catalan resistent (1451), Spanish resistente (late 14th cent.), Portuguese resistente (1446), Italian resistente (c1336), all earliest as adjectives, and also Middle French (rare) resistent (noun) person who offers resistance (1355). Compare earlier resisting adj. and later resistant adj., and also earlier resistence n. With the use as noun compare resistant n.1Many recent instances of the form resistent appear to be misspellings or typographical errors for resistant adj.:1910 Bull. Amer. Geogr.
