单词 bilewhit
释义

bilewhitadj.

Forms: Old English bilewit(e, bilwit, Old English–Middle English bylewite, Middle English bylehwit(t), Middle English bilewhit, bilehwit.
Origin: A word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Etymology doubtful: probably < Germanic *bili- , cognate with Old Irish bil good, mild, and found in Old High German billich , modern German billig just, reasonable + wit n.; giving the sense ‘mild of wit or mind.’ Compare German bilwiz ‘a good friendly house-spirit,’ Grimm Germ. Myth. (ed. 4) III. 137 (Eng. ed. II. 473), and billy-blin(d n. The interpretation ‘white of bill,’ like a young bird ( < Old English bile + hwít), was current at an early date, as shown by 12th cent. spellings; compare French bec-jaune, German gelb-schnabel, though these are depreciative rather than laudatory; and it must be noted that the earlier spellings had not hwít, but wite.
Obsolete.
Mild, gentle, clement; innocent, simple.
