Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French repleviss-, replevir.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman repleviss-, extended stem (compare -ish suffix2) of Anglo-Norman replevir (later also in Law French), also replever, replevier (early 13th cent. or earlier; also occasionally in Old French (northern; 13th cent.)) < re- re- prefix + plevir to provide surety (see pledge n.). Compare post-classical Latin replevire (1354). Compare slightly later replevisable adj.
Law. Now historical and rare.
transitive. To replevy (in various senses); esp. to bail (a person). Chiefly in past participle.
