Etymology: < rear- comb. form (compare forms at that entry) + fief n., after French †rierefief (13th cent. in Old French), variant (with loss of initial a ) of arrière-fief (see arrière-fief n.). Compare post-classical Latin retrofeodum , retrofeudum (12th cent.; 13th cent. in British sources). Compare earlier arrière-fief n.
