Etymology: < Middle French repoin-, repoign-, stem of repoindre to prick, to harass, to stab or pierce again (13th or 14th cent. in Anglo-Norman; 12th cent. in Old French in sense ‘to spur on again or in turn’), to excite (the spirit) (16th cent.) < classical Latin repungere to goad in return < re- re- prefix + pungere to pierce, prick (see punge v.). Compare poignant adj.
Obsolete. rare.
intransitive. To feel regret, repent.
