(1908) also records a form late Middle English ressiaunt.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French resceant, receant.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman resceant, resceaunt, resiant, resaunt, etc., Anglo-Norman and Middle French receant, resseant, reseant (adjective) residing (c1174 in Old French, apparently with reference to the inhabitants of a town), residing in a manor, etc. (thus having certain obligations and privileges) (1292 or earlier), situated (1372 or earlier), (noun) resident of a manor, etc. (a1295 or earlier), resident of a town (1316 or earlier) < classical Latin resident- , residēns , present participle of residēre reside v.1 Compare post-classical Latin resians (1507, 1555 in British sources). Compare earlier resident adj. and later resident n.1Compare Anglo-Norman reseer and Middle French reseoir to sit down again (first half of the 13th cent. in Old French), to stay, abide, to be situated (1307), which is probably not the etymon of reseant , but rather formed later < re- re- prefix + seoir to sit (see séance n.), on the model of reseant. N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (re·ziănt) /ˈrɛzɪənt/.
Obsolete (historical in later use).
