Etymology: < Anglo-Norman reseantie place of residence, dwelling (1230 or earlier), the fact of residing in a place and fulfilling certain obligations (14th cent. or earlier) < reseant resiant adj. + -ie -y suffix3. Compare Middle French reseanti (of a house) inhabited (1413). Compare also Anglo-Norman and Middle French reseantise place of residence (second half of the 12th cent. or earlier), fact of residing in a place and fulfilling certain obligations (c1260 or earlier).
