Etymology: < post-classical Latin retradition-, retraditio redelivery (14th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin retrādit- , past participial stem of retrādere to give back (2nd cent. a.d. in legal context; < re- re- prefix + trādere tradit v.) + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare French retradition (1751 or earlier), German Retradition (first half of the 18th cent. or earlier).
