Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French revelus.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman revelus, Middle French reveleus (French (now regional: Northern) reveleux ) impetuous, rebellious (c1180 in Old French (Picardy) as revelous ), petulant (late 13th cent. in Old French), boisterous, merry, joyful (1350) < revel revel n.1 + -eus , -ous , -us -ous suffix. Compare Old Occitan revelhos (beginning of the 13th cent.). Compare also rebellious adj. and the foreign-language parallels cited at that entry.
Given to revelling; of or characterized by revelry.
