1. Metallurgy and Chemistry. A furnace in which the flames are made to pass over the substance being heated; a reverberatory furnace or kiln. Cf. reverbatory n.In a modern reverberatory furnace the combustion gases are deflected sideways so as to sweep horizontally over the charge.
