Etymology: < French revêtement facing (either for the purpose of stabilization, or for decorative purposes) (1508 in Middle French as revestement ), retaining wall or facing of masonry, brick, or other material supporting or protecting a rampart, wall, etc. (1587; beginning of the 14th cent. in sense ‘ecclesiastical vestment’, 1470 in sense ‘act of putting on an ecclesiastical vestment’, both in form revestement ) < revestir revet v.¹ + -ment -ment suffix. Compare earlier revestment n.¹ and later revetment n.In form revêtment apparently influenced by revetment n. N.E.D. (1908) only records the non-naturalized pronunciation (rəvētmaṅ) /rəvɛtmɑ̃/.

Now rare (in later use chiefly in French contexts).
