Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin respirativus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin respirativus respiratory (c1210 in a British source; 1363 in Chauliac) < classical Latin respīrāt- , past participial stem of respīrāre respire v. + -īvus -ive suffix. Compare Middle French respiratif (1478), Old Occitan respiratiu (14th cent.), Spanish †respirativo (15th cent.), Italian respirativo (1823).
