Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French resplendre; Latin resplendēre.
Etymology: < Middle French resplendre (12th cent. in Old French) and its etymon classical Latin resplendēre < re- re- prefix + splendēre to shine (see splendent adj.). Compare Old Occitan resplandre (a1210), Italian risplendere , †resplendere (a1292). Compare earlier resplendent adj., resplendant adj., resplendour n. Compare also resplendish v. and foreign-language forms cited at that entry.In quot. 2003 apparently intended as a humorous back-formation < resplendent adj.
Now rare.
intransitive. To shine brightly; to be resplendent or radiant (literal and figurative).
