Etymology: < retreat v.1 + -ment suffix. Compare earlier retreat n.The precise meaning of quot. 1677 at sense 1 is unclear: the character Octavia is speaking to Don Diego, and in an earlier scene in the play ( iii. i. 42), Octavia's father ‘draws upon Don Diego, who retreates only defending himself’; however, she later also mentions her father's ‘severity and ill treatment of you’ ( iv. i. 46), perhaps suggesting a link with treatment n. (compare retreatment n.2).
