Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin responde, respondēre.
Etymology: < classical Latin responde, 2nd person singular imperative of respondēre respond v., probably from the first word of the individual entries in the book (see quot. 1597 at sense 1).
Scots Law. Now historical.
1. More fully book of responde. A book containing records or receipts; spec. a book recording all non-entry and relief duties payable to Chancery. Now rare.
