Brit. /rᵻˈspɒnsɪv/, U.S. /rəˈspɑnsɪv/, /riˈspɑnsɪv/
Forms: late Middle English– responsive, 1500s responsyve, 1600s responsiue.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French responsif; Latin responsivus.
Etymology: < Middle French responsif (French responsif ) that contains a response, responding, that constitutes a response (late 14th cent.) and its etymon post-classical Latin responsivus answering (4th cent.) < classical Latin respōns- , past participial stem of respondēre respond v. + -īvus -ive suffix. Compare Old Occitan responsiu (c1349), Catalan responsiu (1388), Spanish responsivo (15th cent.), Italian responsivo (a1498). In the sense development in English influenced by response n. and respond v. With use as noun compare Middle French responsif objection, reply from the opposing party (mid 15th cent.), responsive written response (early 16th cent. or earlier), Old Occitan responsiva written response, letter (13th cent. in an isolated attestation), post-classical Latin responsiva (feminine) written reply, letter sent in reply (frequently from 13th cent. in British sources), responsivum (neuter) word or part of speech used in responding (13th cent. in a British source).
