Etymology: < classical Latin respuere to reject, spit out, to reject with disdain or abhorrence, to refuse, spurn < re- re- prefix + spuere to spit (see spew v.). Compare earlier respuate v.
Obsolete.
transitive. To reject strongly. Also: (literal) to spit out.
