Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French restituer, (with change of conjugation) restituir (French restituer ) to give back (something which has illegally been taken from a person) (1261 in Old French), to reinstate (a person) to (an office, dignity, etc.) (a1278 or earlier in Anglo-Norman; in continental French from 1362) and its etymon classical Latin restituere to set up again, re-erect, to reconstitute, to make healthy again, restore, to revive, to re-establish, to renew, to restore to a given position, status, or condition, to reinstate, to make good, to give back unharmed < re- re- prefix + statuere statute v. Compare (with change of conjugation) Old Occitan restetuir , restituir , restituzir (1293), Catalan restituir (14th cent.), Spanish restituir (first half of the 13th cent.), Portuguese restituir (1320), Italian restituire (end of the 13th cent.). The Latin verb was also borrowed into other Germanic languages, in some cases via French; compare Middle Dutch, Dutch restitueren , Middle Low German restituēren , restituīren , German (now rare) restituieren (early 16th cent. as †restituiren ). Compare slightly earlier restitution n. and later restitute adj., restitute v.
