Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin retrochorus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin retrochorus (9th cent.; 13th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin retrō retro- prefix + chorus choir n. N.E.D. (1908) also gives the pronunciation (rītro-) /riːtrəʊ-/ for the first element.
Christian Church.
In a cathedral or large church: the area of the chancel situated behind the reredos of the main altar.The retrochoir sometimes has a small altar positioned directly behind the main altar.
